The humble 142 still forms the backbone of local services mainly in the major conurbations. 24 of these units are to be replaced by 158's during 2007 with some units off lease already.

Fleet: 142003/005/007/011-028/030-058/060-062/064-066/078-079/084/086-094/096
8th Aug 2007Class 144 (21 images)
Broadly similar to the Class 142 these units were built by BREL/Alexander around the same time as their cousins. These units can normally be seen on local services within West Yorkshire although they can be seen as far afield as Morecambe & Lincoln. The final 10 units are in 3 car formation.

Fleet: 144001-144023
8th Aug 2007Class 150 (48 images)
The Class 150's are split into two sub classes. The original 150/1's have a full width cab whilst the later 150/2's came with a flexible inter unit gangway connection so look very different to their older sisters. The units are slowly being repainted into Northern Rail livery and some units have an advertisment on the side.

Fleet: 150133 - 150/201/203/205/207/211/215/218/222-225/228/268-277
8th Aug 2007Class 153 (22 images)
These single car units were formerly 2 car class 155's but were rebuilt with a small cab at the inner end. They are versatile and can work lightly loaded branch services and can be used to strengthen 2 car units on peak time workings.

Fleet: 153301/304/307/315-317/319/324/328/330-332/351-352/357-360/363/378
8th Aug 2007Class 155 (19 images)
These units sponsored by West Yorkshire PTE operate on services out of Leeds mainly to places such as Manchester Victoria, Selby, Wakefield Westgate, York & Knottingley. They have just received a massive refurbishment which has brought them up to a high standard.

Fleet: 155341 - 155347
8th Aug 2007Class 156 (24 images)
Probably most peoples favourites, the Class 156 has worked reliably on a variety of routes for many years. This class also displays all 4 variations of Northern's livery schemes including the purple based launch scheme on 156451. The class work many duties across the network however after over 15 years none of them are booked to work over the S&C now despite the fact that 156484 has recently appeared in an S&C promotion livery.

Fleet: 156420-421/423-429/438/440-441/443-444/448/451-452/454-455/459-461/463-464/466/468-473/475/479-484/486-491/497-498
8th Aug 2007Class 158 (21 images)
The 158 fleet started out at just 18 units when the franchise came into being. However with extra funding from the likes of Yorkshire Forward, Metro & Merseytravel as well as striking a deal with Angel Trains the fleet has increased by 30. They are used on some of the Premier routes such as Sheffield - Leeds fast services, York - Blackpool, Hull - York/Sheffield & Leeds - Carlisle via the S&C. A steady process of refurbishing the units has begun.

Current Fleet: 158752-759/784/787/790-797/842-845/848-851/853/859-861/901-910.

Units to transfer in: 158782/786/789/815-817/855/866-872
8th Aug 2007Class 321 (14 images)
The smallest of Northern's classes are the 321's. Although they generally go about there business on the Leeds - Doncaster line with little fuss there have been some other 321's working in the area whilst Northern's received a heavy refurbishment. The 'foreign' units have been 321347 from ONE (Never entered traffic), 321407/423 from Silverlink & 322484. Although not a 321 I have included the latter in this section.

Fleet: 321901 - 321903
8th Aug 2007Class 323 (7 images)
The Class 323's work services in the South Manchester suburbs to places such as Hadfield, Macclesfield, Hazel Grove & Crewe. They were given a refurbishment by previous owner First North Western and wear the livery of that operator. They were built in the 1990's at Hunslet in Leeds and are probably the most forgotten about class in Northern's fleet.

Fleet: 323223 - 323239
8th Aug 2007Class 333 (14 images)
Northern's newest Class was introduced during 2001 with previous operator Arriva Trains Northern. The units were originally 3 car but due to passenger demand were soon made into 4 car units. The units work services on the Leeds/Bradford/Skipton/Ilkley circuit known locally as the triangle.

Fleet: 333001 - 333016
Welcome
Hello & welcome to this fotopic site dedicated to Northern Rail. As an employee since the company's inception I have worked all classes of trains for the company (excepting the 323's) and can sometimes get the photo's not available to the average enthusiast. Each class is split into sections so you'll be able to find your favourite unit somewhere (so long as I have photographed it of course!)

I hope you enjoy this collection and please visit again for updates.
